What happens at a Humanist wedding ceremony?

Every wedding is unique, there is no set list of things to include. It is all up to you.

Ceremonies often include one or more readings, some words about your love story, it may also include your declarations or promises to one another, you may choose to exchange rings, and you may choose to have another symbol of unity such as handfasting, candle lighting or sand blending. Most importantly, your ceremony can be whatever you want it to be, so that it reflects your personal approach to life.

Where can we get married?

One of the joys of a humanist ceremony is the freedom it offers. Humanist ceremonies don’t need to take place in a licensed venue, which means you can hold your wedding almost anywhere. A wildflower meadow, a quiet lakeside, a forest glade, a hilltop, a garden you love — all are possible. You might prefer a beautiful indoor space such as a barn, an art gallery, a historic hall, or a cosy country house.

If you dream of exchanging vows at sunrise, at golden‑hour sunset, or beneath a full moon, you can. It’s all possible.

What does the celebrant do?

As you wedding celebrant I will:

  • listen to your story, your ideas and your wishes for your wedding celebration.

  • offer you ideas and guidance as you would like, so you can create the ceremony that is right for you.

  • create a script for the ceremony which includes exactly what you want it to and which reflects your personalities and wishes for your future life together.

  • edits and change the script according to your feedback until you are 100% happy with it.

  • hold a rehearsal if you wish to have one.

  • conduct the ceremony itself.

  • leave you with a presentation copy of your wedding script.

How long are you there for on the day of the ceremony?

I’ll be there in plenty of time before your ceremony starts, and of course I stay until the very end. I only take one wedding per day, which means you can relax knowing that any delays or changes won’t affect a thing — I’m there for you until you head off to the next stage in your celebrations 🎉

Is it a legal ceremony?

Humanist weddings are legally binding in Scotland and Northern Island, and Humanists UK is working hard to achieve the same recognition in England and Wales. For now, couples in England and Wales will need to arrange a simple legal registration at a registry office. Most choose to do this earlier the same day, or a few days before their humanist ceremony.

If you’d like, you can include the signing of a symbolic wedding certificate during your ceremony. It creates a lovely moment for photos and makes a beautiful keepsake, without interrupting the flow of your day.

Where do you work?

I live in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, which is great for all of the Cotswolds, including Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, and Dursley. I am also able to conduct ceremonies in Bristol, the Forest of Dean, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire.

I am happy to travel, so if please do get in touch if you are not sure whether you are my area.

What if you are ill on the day of the ceremony?

I’m accredited by Humanists UK as a wedding celebrant and proud to be part of the Humanist Ceremonies network. This means you’re fully supported — if, for any reason, I’m unable to be there on the day, one of my trusted colleagues will step in to deliver the ceremony we’ve carefully created together, exactly as planned.
